Where to find your account and routing numbers on a check

When you receive your first check book, you may be curious to know where to find the account and routing numbers on a check itself. Now, the placement of these numbers may vary depending on the bank you use or the type of account you open, but there are a few helpful tips to find out where your routing and account number are located on any check.

Every check will carry three sets of numbers that are usually listed at the bottom. These three sets are your routing number, your account number, and your check number. You may be curious to know what these numbers are used for and where exactly to find them on the check. Fortunately, we’ve listed a few helpful tips below:

Routing number – The bank’s routing number is used to identify the specific bank you are using and is usually the first set of numbers located on the lower left corner of the check. A good way of knowing that you’re looking at the routing number is by counting the number of digits. Each routing number will have exactly 9-digits.

Account number – The account number is most often located in the bottom center of the check and is used to identify your personal bank account. This set of numbers will be unique to your bank account and will be longer than your other two sets.

Check number – The check number is usually the last set of numbers listed on the check and will be shorter than the other two sets. The check number is used to identify and keep track of the check you’re currently writing.

Knowing where your account and routing number are located on the check can come in handy the next time you’re asked to provide either one. However, you should always exercise caution whenever you’re asked to provide both your routing and account number for any financial transaction. If you have any questions about sharing your personal bank information or need any further help locating your routing and account numbers, then you can always contact your bank directly and speak with a customer service representative.
