One of Major League Baseball’s oldest traditions is the annual All-Star Game.
This year’s installment – the 89th All-Star game, will return to our nation’s capital for the first time since 1969 when it’s played at Nationals Park on July 17. It will be the fifth time Washington, D.C. has hosted the game. The city was without baseball from 1972 until 2005, until the Montreal Expos became the Washington Nationals.
The American League won last year’s contest in Miami, 2-1 – the fifth straight victory for the American League. Since the first All-Star Game at the home of the Chicago White Sox, Comiskey Park in 1933, each league has won 43 times. The leagues tied in 1961 and 2002, and the game was not played in 1945 due to World War II.
The All-Star Game provides an unofficial halfway point for Major League Baseball. Once again, it’s been a highly entertaining and interesting first half in MLB.
In the American League – the Houston Astros, fresh off their first World Series title in franchise history, are off to an amazing start and sit on top of the A.L. West and are a favorite to win their second championship in a row.
The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are in a dogfight atop the American League East, while the Cleveland Indians are trying to win their first World Series since 1948 over in the Central Division.
In the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers, last year’s National League pennant winners, sit in first place and are looking for their sixth straight N.L. West championship.
The Chicago Cubs, who did the improbable and won their first World Series since 1908 just two years ago, are in the hunt in the National League Central along with their rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals and the upstart Milwaukee Brewers.
In the East, the Atlanta Braves are in first place and look to get back to the postseason for the first time since 2013.
