Check fraud was once an easy feat for an experienced criminal. However, recently there have been numerous advancements in the personal check printing industry that help prevent and detect check fraud.
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has created industry standards and practices for personal bank checks that significantly reduce the risk of check fraud by discouraging alteration or replication attempts, and thwarting counterfeiting efforts.
On the document itself, there are five key features that give you piece of mind that the checks you are writing will not be tampered with or duplicated.
- Micro-Security Print — Very small printing that is invisible to the naked eye will break up when photo copied. This feature is indicated by the MP icon to the right of the signature line.
- Chemical Protection — ensures that what you write on your checks cannot be altered by any chemical means. If someone tries to alter the document, a stain will appear indicating the check has been tampered with.
- Erasure Protection — Guards against erasing or modifying your checks. If anyone attempts to erase information on the document, it produces a stain indicating the check has been tampered with.
- “Original Document” Security Screen — A security screen on the back of the check that lists all security features included on the check which is unable to be photocopied clearly.
- Padlock Icon — Indicated by the lock icon to the right of the word “Dollars” is your assurance that security enhancements are built in to prevent and detect check fraud. This refers to the features included in the security screen on the back of the check.
