The NCAA created the Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament in 1939 to determine a national champion among major college basketball programs. The tournament includes the conference champions from all 32 Division 1 conferences, and 36 at large bids. The total field of 68 is then split into four separate regionally divided brackets, with each bracket independently seeded from the others. Once the brackets are set, the tournament moves onto “The First Four”, which describes the first round of play in games between eight lower ranked teams. Once “The First Four” winners are decided, the field of 64 teams is complete and the madness begins! There have been 35 different teams win the NCAA tournament, and with a little luck, this year could be your teams turn.

March 15th is Selection Sunday; the day college basketball programs all across the country discover whether their regular season efforts were enough to award them a coveted spot in the field of 68. Many bubble teams like Nebraska, Oregon and Florida State can only sit idly and hope to see themselves placed in a bracket, unless as an underdog they win their division tournaments to receive an automatic berth.
The first round begins on March 17th-18th, as “The First 4” look to move into the field of 64 in Dayton, Ohio. Over the course of the following 3 weekends, the nation will see whether the top ranked teams win or fall to underdogs, who the tournament Cinderella team is, and if The Ohio State Buckeyes spread defense will hold up against top tier competition in a wild ride of emotion and turmoil. All we can do is sit by and enjoy the madness!
