The Major League Baseball season is officially underway! The regular season began Sunday, April 5th in Chicago as the Chicago Cubs took on the St. Louis Cardinals. There are many different storylines this year that may significantly impact the league, so let’s take a look at a few of the top ones.
Bud Selig is out. Rob Manfred is in.
Manfred takes over for Selig as commissioner after being elected on August 14th 2014. There is thought that Rob Manfred might be a little softer on player labor negotiations, which may have significant financial impacts down the line.
How Impactful will age be?
The New York Yankees field the oldest team in the MLB, and made only one off season change, adding 30 year old Chase Headley. It is possible that the Yankees could face another year with injury plagued players, just as they did last year. On the other end of the spectrum, the Chicago Cubs look to be fielding many of their new young prospects. With the addition of Kris Bryant, the Cubs look to have a lot of offensive firepower, but may struggle with issues such as lack of experience.
Speeding Up the Pace of Play
The MLB has rolled out new measures that are aimed at speeding up the pace of play. The new rules have various impacts, among them forcing batters to keep a foot in the batter’s box during at-bats, and timing pitching changes and half-inning breaks. Hopefully this is not too large of an impact on the game.
These storylines, among others, look to unfold during the 2015 season. One thing is for sure, whichever team you root for, you will need to be loud and proud as this year most teams made off-season moves with a win-now attitude.
